Just recently, I saw a zombie bashing on a closed glass double door, with the 2nd door open. You can get an attack landed on you instantly by sprinting past even a single zombie. Now, with the new animations the combat feels completely different and zombie attacks just feel like the fire off instantly depending on your angle to them and what animation you are in. If you sprinted at a good speed (not weighed down or tired) you would not get hit by a lone zombie. It felt like the player skill and response was the determining factor. The exception was if one surprised me or ended up behind me. Generally, I very rarely got properly injured by a lone, or even up to 3 zombies. This gave you a small window of time to move out of reach, attack, or shove them away. Previously, in order to take a solid attack from a zombie before, they had to do a complete attack animation, then presumably do a calculation to see if they beat your guard skill. It feels like their mechanics are now all about what animation state the player is in at the moment they want to attack, and less about animations from the zombies. 41 I think the slider has been far to aggressively moved into the overkill territory and zombies are too dangerous even in very small numbers, and they are usually in large numbers. At a point they were too easy to kill in large numbers once you had some skillups and a good weapon like a fireaxe, I'm fine with making that not feasible. Overall, not so bad once you got used to it. My only issues that persisted for a good while were there were issues of getting attacked by zombies that didn't draw in yet and around corners. The zombies seem to have been altered here and there over time, maybe solid improvements. I've been playing Project Zomboid since it was on Desura, I think it might have been.
TL DR Zombie combat now feels RNG and less a matter of skill, practice, and gear.
